Earlier this month, Baltimore State’s Attorney Ivan Bates endorsed Dixon shortly after going public with what he called a growing “rift” between him and Scott. Bates said Scott has not been a “partner” on his implementation of a citation docket meant to prosecute low-level crimes. "Dr. Carey Wright's distinguished career as an educator, administrator, and leader in public education has uniquely prepared her to meet this moment as Maryland's State Superintendent," said Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.

"She is a champion for students, and I'm confident that she is the leader we need to fulfill the promise of creating a world-class public education system for Maryland." The governor's housing package also provides incentives for developers to add affordable housing options in future projects and allows them to exceed density limits. The governor also planned to sign about two dozen other bills into law during a non-public event Thursday. Both measures reflect a national conversation about what books and materials should be publicly available in schools and libraries. Those bills were among the 261 that Gov. Wes Moore (D) signed into law on Thursday. A legislative ethics panel called for Henson to apologize to House Speaker Adrienne Jones and a slew of other lawmakers and asked that she never be assigned to the House Appropriations Committee again.

Chambers

Washington’s actions have been exulted as a critical step in the establishment of civil authority over military rule. On January 14, 1784, the Treaty of Paris was ratified here, officially recognizing the United States as a sovereign nation and marking the end of the war. A notable example of colonial architecture, it was designed by preeminent Maryland architect Joseph Horatio Anderson, also responsible for Whitehall (WS79). As the centerpiece of Annapolis’s notable Baroque town plan, it is situated within one of two circles, at the heart of the Annapolis Historic District.

Completed in 1779, it was the site of nationally important events after the American Revolution, including George Washington's resignation as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, and the ratification of the Treaty of Paris. The rich architecture and history of the building was recognized in 1960 when the State House was designated as a National Historic Landmark. Moore also signed three bills Thursday that were part of his affordable housing package. The bill allows the AIB and Maryland State Board of Education, in consultation with local school systems, to limit the number and types of courses a high school students can take in a dual enrollment program for classes at a higher education institution.

Meeting that deadline was critical in order for General Services and the Sterling, Virginia-based contractor, The Christman Company, to create a backdrop for the historic swearing-in of the state’s first Black governor. The State House was greatly praised in its day as one of the country’s finest public buildings. Its exceptional classically inspired interior finishes were undertaken by noted craftsman John Rawlings, formerly of London. Its timber-framed dome was erected by Annapolis architect-builder Joseph Clark. The unusually tall dome comprises a two-stage drum and lantern with splayed pent roof and a lightning rod ornamented by a copper-sheathed carved acorn symbolizing strength.

Regular readers will recall my passionate enthusiasm for the National Park Service. A quick search on my blog and you will find dozens of sites we have visited- check them out here. Whenever we travel or visit  a new area, I always check for any nearby site- the Park Service has an app and website for searching sites. On a recent trip to lower Manhattan to explore the Fraunces Tavern Museum and National Museum of the American Indian, we realized we were less than a half mile from Federal Hall National Memorial and decided to visit. Open in 2006, the National Museum of the Marine Corps is already expanding to include more exhibits and more presentation space. The 100,000 square foot museum also includes an outdoor Semper Fidelis Memorial Park, with 42 sculptures and memorials honoring individuals, battalions, and events; outdoor overlooks; and a chapel.

Workers will restore the exterior to its aesthetic from around the time it was built between 1735 and 1736. It is the oldest public building in Annapolis, according to the Maryland State Archives. According to General Services’ records, this is the first large-scale restoration project the historic property has undergone since construction was completed in 1779, Cavey said. The historic Maryland State House dome has been restored and the second phase of the project to rehabilitate the country’s oldest state capital in continuous legislative use is now in progress. The Old Treasury Building, a small structure on the State House grounds, is also getting a face-lift. Our LIVE Virtual Visits are a minimum of 45 minutes to a maximum of 75 minutes long, depending on your group’s preference.

Annapolis Discovered

The same rust and black marble lines the chamber and forms the Ionic columns along the walls. The speaker sits in front of a broken marble pediment supporting a clock. It is the oldest U.S. state capitol in continuous legislative use, dating to 1772 and houses the Maryland General Assembly, plus the offices of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. In 1783 and 1784 it served as the capitol building of the United States Congress of the Confederation, and is where Ratification Day, the formal end of the American Revolutionary War, occurred.

Due to the program size, the Visitors Program can reserve a limited number of group tours each weekday. When it comes to housing, the governor signed his entire legislative package into law. Those bills address everything from added protection for renters to paths creating more affordable housing.

The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick salvaged from two then-recently burned colonial houses, Bushwood Manor and Cartegena. This is the oldest state capitol still in active use as the seat of government and the only one to have served as the nation’s capital, witnessing important events that ended the American Revolutionary War. The Continental Congress met in its Senate Chamber from November 26, 1783, to August 13, 1784, during which time George Washington appeared to resign his commission as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.

The museum is situated on a 135 acre campus next to the Marine Corps base in Quantico and located less than one hour south of Washington D.C. It is one of the most beautiful, sobering, and enlightening museums we have visited. We recently visited the National Museum of the American Indian in New York City (read about our adventures here) and less than a week later we were in Washington DC and spent a few hours (and a yummy lunch!) at the Washington Museum. You can also read about our adventures at several other Washington DC museums here. On a recent visit to Annapolis, Maryland, we enjoyed learning all about the history of the state, and significant American history, while touring the State House in the heart of Annapolis.
