Carnival Jubilee cruise tips: How to save money, skip lines and more

I was one of just three non-employees on Carnival Cruise Line's new Carnival Jubilee, the third ship in the line's Excel Class, which gives a nod to some of the brand's original vessels. Although Carnival has had onboard seafood options for years, this is a far cry from the pool deck's Seafood Shack (which recently sold me a mediocre crabcake). Instead, at Rudi's, you'll find a don't-miss lobster mac and cheese, plenty of meat and seafood selections, and crabcakes that are actually worth the price of admission.

The suggested attire for women on such nights is cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses. Passengers who wish to avoid dressing up can enjoy dinner in any of the casual eateries aboard. Carnival Jubilee does not have a specific daytime dress code, and people dress casually. If it's a sea day in a warm-weather destination, and you're bound for the top deck, T-shirts, shorts and bathing suits (with a cover-up to go inside) are just fine.

Carnival Jubilee also offers a fun space up top on Deck 18 called the Ultimate Playground. Here, cruisers can try out the ship’s BOLT rollercoaster, scale the vertigo-inducing ropes course, play minigolf or basketball and more. Many of the lines do move quickly, but our wait times ranged from 5 to 30 minutes.

Where does Carnival Jubilee sail to?

This is especially true if you have a group that wants to eat together but has differing opinions about which casual venues each person wants to hit. It can be a pain to have to venture to a different area of the ship to grab food when your friends and family are looking at other dining options closer to the pool. Cabins in this section of the ship come in several configurations to suit different needs, and they include access to a dedicated lounge, allowing families to spend time together over snacks, drinks and even board games. For example, the pool deck, with its citrusy color scheme and vintage smokestack design, is like something straight out of the '70s.

In addition to six zones that include everything from a digital octopus to a roller coaster, the vessel offers fantastic food and great service, but you can make your experience even better with a few insider tips. It's kitschy but classy in the most unexpected and delightful ways. The adjacent fitness center is on the small side but features for-fee personal training and organized fitness classes, as well as equipment that's free for passengers to use. I very much enjoyed an omelet with hashbrowns at Sea Day Brunch and salmon during the formal night dinner in the Pacific Restaurant.

Let’s see what else… debuting right here there’s Dear Future Husband, an interactive pop-wedding adventure. The ride enables guests to soar 187 feet above the sea and reach speeds of 40 MPH on two-person, motorcycle-style open cars. They are all-electric vehicles, with the front driver controlling the vehicle’s speed.

This is why it’s extra important to fly in a day early for your cruise. For those looking for a little adventure, there’s the Ultimate Playground zone. This area of the ship features one of the best attractions at sea, Bolt. This electric rollercoaster at the top of the ship is certainly a thrilling experience, albeit an up-charge activity.

These cabins have exclusive access to the Havana sundeck which includes its own pool. This is open to all guests and features Cuban cocktails, coffee, and soda as well as live music many evenings. All “Excel” suites include access to the exclusive Loft 19 sundeck located on deck 19 forward.

After lunch, we grabbed our afternoon lattes and headed back to our cabin to do some work until our next scheduled event, a cocktail hour at Dr. Inks. As our regular readers may have guessed, I went with a Caesar salad and the chicken entree. These selections were on par with most steakhouse experiences at sea but for a much better value. While this option adds variety to the dining lineup, we are glad that it’s complimentary because we don’t see ourselves ever paying to dine here. Of note, all visits are free on Jubilee; only the first visit is free on Mardi Gras and Celebration, with subsequent visits $8 each. With Your Time Dining, cruisers simply join a virtual queue in the HUB app and wait for a notification.

The Family Harbor Lounge includes breakfast, snacks, movies, and games. And kids dine free off the kids’ menu at Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse, Bonsai Sushi, and Rudi’s Seagrill. Camp Ocean, Carnival's kids club, is impressive on Carnival Jubilee. It's fun, brightly colored and modern, and it's staffed by a dedicated team that organizes games, crafts and other activities for children, based on age.

Go one deck farther, and you can choose between the Havana Bar, which serves Latin-themed cocktails, and the Heroes Tribute Lounge, which has a special menu of drinks dedicated to military members. The menu has several types of meat — including steak, of course, as well as lamb chops and chicken — and seafood items like fish and lobster tail. I went with a 9-ounce filet mignon, which was cooked to perfection. It came alongside several sauces and sides of broccoli and crinkle-cut fries for $49 ($15 for kids).

If you make a reservation through the app, you'll receive a notification to report to the host stand when your table is ready. Fully accessible rooms are stair-free, flat-threshold cabins, which offer wider (32-inch) doorways, turning space and bathrooms equipped with grab bars and shower seats. On my sailing, I stayed in a balcony cabin, which was elegantly decorated in neutrals with blue accents. I appreciated touches like ample vanity mirror lighting, adjustable shelving in the closets and a surplus of USB outlets throughout the room, including near the vanity and beside the bed. One example is the Dr. Seuss-themed Seuss-a-palooza Parade that makes its way through the Currents zone once per sailing.
